Located about eight kilometers from Yangshuo town, Moon Hill is a limestone pinnacle with a moon-shaped hole penetrating the hill. Hence it is given the name Moon Hill. It is one of the most visited attractions in Yangshuo. Seen from different perspectives, the hole takes on different shapes ranging from the crescent moon, half moon to the full moon, forming a marvelous spectacle.
The altitude of Moon Hill is 380 meters high; the relative height is 230 meter, and 410 meters in length. The moon hole is about 50 meters in height and width shaped like an archway. The two sides of the cave are as flat as the wall. Atop the hole are full of stalactite in various formations. In the sunny day, the cave appears as if a round mirror hanging on the summit of the hill. Visitors can see the blue sky and white cloud through the "Moon". When it is cloudy or rainy, the "Moon" is deep in mist.
About 800 marble stairs are waiting to be climbed before you reach the giant hole. Although the stairs are not difficult, it takes around 40 minutes to walk up slowly. After reach the "Moon", when you look around, you will get the whole view of the surrounding area- the mountains, the rivers, the fields and the farmers' houses, all of which make it quite a panoramic picture.
Moon Hill is also the ideal place for rock climbing lovers. There are 14 rock-climbing routes on the northwest side for you to choose. Some are relatively easy to climb; the others are much challenging for climbers. Safety should be taken much care of while climbing up the hill. It is the basic necessities to take along the climbing shoes, safety belt, main rope, iron lock, quick draw and descesder. Besides, water and food should be in abundant storage to help you restore physical strength.
Cycling to the Moon Hill is also a good option for the journey. There are several routes that you can take to get to Moon Hill. The original route was via the village of Aishan. It was a short route surrounded by beautiful scenery. Another popular route is to head west out of Yangshuo towards the town of Yima and then join the smaller village road along the Yulong River. It is quite enjoyable for you to cycle here.
On the way to or back from Moon Hill, it is great fun to explore the nearby caves. The Black Buddha New Water Caves and the Longmen Water Cave are lots of fun for those who love a little adventure.
